Winslow:
When I graduated from college back in 1977, I attended Doyle Venn’s legendary Publishing Procedures Course at what was then called Radcliffe College. During the six-week summer intensive, we learned the publishing industry from soup to nuts. (The highlight for me was a seminar with Toni Morrison and her agent Lynn Nesbit – they were there to talk about the author-agent relationship, but just being in Toni Morrison’s presence was a powerful experience I’ll never forget.) My passion was and is Writing, so my desire to attend this course was to learn how I could use my publishing expertise to become a successful writer. Shortly afterward I moved to New York City and worked in the publishing world for many years, as well as writing my novels which were traditionally published. In 2007 I discovered the wonderful world of independent publishing. This seemed to me to be a dream come true. Not only were we authors given the freedom to publish ourselves but we could do it gracefully, inexpensively, and professionally. The publishing world I’d grown up in— that of mysterious strangers having secret meetings to decide the fate of your beloved book—had been turned upside-down. A level playing field was opened to us and the people who matter most to us – our readers – can now decide for themselves if they like our books. So WriteSpa Press is part of a longing to empower writers to create their own destiny – to be brave and have fun with their Writing. Write what you love to read, have it professionally edited (every writer needs an editor), design it so it’s just as you imagine it, and voilà! a book that your friends and the whole world can enjoy. There’s nothing like that feeling! And I want as many writers as possible to have it.
